Matthew is 3 weeks old today

It is hard to believe that three weeks have already passed since Matthew was born! He continues to do well and we "celebrated" today by staying home since Katharine was out of daycare yesterday and today with a cold. Woo-hoo, we are pretty wild around here!

Sorry there is no picture but I thought another picture of him sleeping might be too much and I just wasn't organized enough to take pictures today. I hope this is not a sign that the second baby will get short changed on photos (I'm going to try very hard not to do that!).

2 week check up

Talk about a healthy, bouncing baby boy! It was another round of rave reviews from the pediatrician at today's check up (officially the two week check up but it was pushed back closer to three weeks due to our previous visit and his high marks at that visit). Anyway, his weight is now up to 8 lbs, 14 oz. and he has grown a 1/4 of an inch. So, he is now average for weight and in the 60th percentile for height. As you may recall, he was born at 7 lbs., 8 oz., dropped to 7 lbs. upon leaving the hospital, and had then bounced back to 7 lbs., 10 oz. at our last visit. The doctor says they are supposed to gain an ounce a day at this age and it had been 14 days since our last weigh in and he has gained more than an ounce a day. The doctor says this is an excellent sign of a thriving baby and she said everything else about him looked good as well. It is always such a relief to hear a doctor say he is doing well! Now we do not have to go back until the 8 week check up and at that appointment he will get his first vaccinations.

Katharine stayed home from school today partly due to a cold and partly due to complications in the drop off and picking up routine. We have felt really lucky Matthew has not caught this cold that Katharine has (visualize me knocking on wood here) had for about a week now. I can't wait for it to pass and I hope it is the most serious germy thing that Katharine brings home from daycare. So, today marks my first day staying home with them both alone and so far it is going pretty smoothly (again, visualize me knocking on wood).

Other than the cold, Katharine continues to do well with Matthew and to be a trooper in adjusting to our new family size. She is talking up a storm these days, loves reading books, and singing songs (I seriously need to learn to post video clips because we have a couple of cute ones). She has a little song she sings (she must have learned it from daycare or just made it up) that starts out "happy to see you" and then segways into her own version of the ABC song.
She can also be just a bit bossy at times and highly directive. Example: "I am going to get on the blue bed. No, Momma, stay here." And she is very particular about who gets to help her do what, what is worn to school each day, and even the color of the cup her milk goes into. It keeps life interesting to try to keep up with this and decide which battles to take on and which to let pass!

More to come soon!

Too cute not to post

This is a photo I took of Matthew just after he turned two weeks old. I have a similar photo of Katharine around the same age sleeping in this same bassinet.

Let's keep him

I had the sweetest conversation with Katharine this morning. We had just woken up and I was still in bed with Matthew in my arms. Katharine came in and got on the bed to hang out with us. We were talking about Matthew and she was looking him over. She then suddenly said, "I like Matthew. I want to keep him." I thought it was so sweet and I cherish every moment of sweetness between them and hope it lasts! At least she hasn't decide to send him back just yet! I realize I may need to document this so I can bring it out occasionally and remind them how much they loved each other.

On another note, today is my first day back in pre-pregnancy jeans!! Woo-hoo!

Matthew's Due Date

Today was supposed to be Matthew's due date! Hard to believe he has already been here for 2.5 weeks! Matthew continues to do well and we have another check up with the pediatrician this Monday so it will be interesting to see how he weighs in!

Two weeks old today!

It is hard to believe that Matthew has already been here for two weeks (and his "real" due date is not for two more days!). I'll try to bring you up to date on how our life is with two!

How is everyone doing?:

Matthew:
He is a super baby and (so far) is very mellow just like Katharine was in those first days. Matthew was born weighing 7 lbs, 8 oz and left the hospital weighing 7 lbs (born on Tuesday and we left the hospital on Thursday). We took Matthew in to the pediatrician on the following Monday for a weight check and he was already up to 7 lbs, 10 oz. The pediatrician said this was a great sign of a thriving baby to have surpassed his birth weight so quickly. She said he was "perfect" and I am inclined to agree! He is currently spending the bulk of his time pursuing interests such as sleeping, pooping, and eating every 2-3 hours. This picture was taken today so it is hot off the presses!

Katharine:
Given that everyone seemed to have advice about what it would be like having two (harder, much harder) and how the older child would react (badly), we have had pretty pleasant surprises with Katharine. She is adjusting very well to baby brother and seems to (for the most part) get a kick out of him. Katharine came to see him in the hospital on day 2 of his little life and she thought that was pretty exciting. And the night we brought him home I thought Katharine might jump out of her skin she was so excited. I have never heard her laugh in such an excited way. (We have a pretty cute video that captures a bit of it so I will try to post it soon if I can figure out how to do it). We have tried to maintain her routine and I think that has helped a good bit.

The parents:
Well, we are busy and we are tired but I think we are still in the early phases of the parental glow of realizing our family is now complete! Paul managed to get through the birth and the first two weeks without canceling a single class and I even managed to check my work email everyday I was in the hospital. And now it is amazing how the days fly by and all I am doing is taking care of home and baby. It will be interesting to try to bring work back into the fold (I am currently planning to go back full time on April 14 and this will also be Matthew's first day of daycare). Of course, today is also our first day of parenting solo without help from our wonderful mothers. My mother was here for a week before and a week after the birth and Paul's mother was here for about 5 days after that.

It fell off!

....no, not that; the umbilical cord stump! This is actually a relief because that thing really freaks me out and it had been hanging by a thread for about a day. Now, Matthew (or, as Katharine says, Mam-mew) can take a real bath instead of a sponge bath and I have one less thing to worry about when I change all those diapers! (The next step is to work on getting used to the projectile peeing that makes boys different from girls!).

More updates to follow soon...

Yes, we are still here and only a little tired!

Sorry for the gap in postings. Maternity leave and some IT issues at home have made it difficult to post (oh yeah, and taking care of an infant and a two year old may have something to do with it too!).

Anyway, we are back on the internet at home so hopefully this will lead to more postings! Here is a pic of Matthew on day 2 of life!

Still waiting

Still no baby. Will we have a SuperBowl baby or a Super Tuesday baby?

No news

Still no baby yet! Next appointment is on Tuesday so we will see if I make that long!
