Developmental update -- Katharine has discovered the question: Why? For those of you who have young children, have raised young children, or have little ones in your lives; I don't think I need to say much more!

As a parenthetical, along with why, has come "why not", "why did you do that" and several other questioning variations. It is definitely a test of a middle-aged parents creativity! (And yes, I often say, "because I said so!")

Compare and Contrast at Eleven Months Old

Left - Matthew

Right - KK

Matthew - 11 months old!

My how time flies! I can't believe that I should be in the thick of planning a first birthday party (better add that to the "to do" list)! Matthew continues to thrive and is doing really well!

He is now crawling like a champ, starting to pull himself to standing, and will attempt to take some shaky steps if you are holding his hands. As I observe him now, I can see that he is on the precipice of leaving "babyhood" and becoming a more independent fellow on his way to toddlerhood. He often tries to vocalize and communicate with us. He consistently uses the "ma-ma" and "da-da"sounds. And you can see him get frustrated at his inability to get up and around like he would like. I think this boy is ready to jump up and go!

As for eating, so far we have a picky one. Talk about a carb-aholic. We have been introducing finger foods and soft solids and vegetables and fruits are a total downer with this boy. He wants nothing to do with them. He loves them as babyfood, but as solids it is a definite no. What he loves best are carbs - waffles, cereal, crackers, bread -- all very good. He also seems to like pastas and some meats. It is challenging and once we are not using formula and babyfood as the main staples of his nutrition, I'm wondering how to keep this kid on a healthy diet!

He continues to get along great with his big sis and Katharine loves being one! She has the dominating personality that is going to love taking care of this boy! They play together some now and it is fun to watch. Usually Matthew attends Katharine's "parties" (big mess of stuff laid on the floor on a blanket) and chews on some of her toys while she imagines she has just planned the biggest party ever! There is never a dull moment in our house (well, except for now - this brief period when the kids have fallen asleep and we are still awake).
