My little kindergartner

First day of school montage

Funny for the day

Mom of the Year?... Not today

So, today is the first day of school for my two precious, adorable children. And, to really hit it home, today is the first day of kindergarten for Katharine (some might argue this is a milestone).

I'd love to report that I rose to the occasion in super-mom fashion but, alas, it seems the day is starting out as a bit of a bust. First, I did not take a single picture this morning and what is worse (at least in my mind), I did not think to take a single picture this morning until I got to school and all the other mom's were doing it. Of course I'll take one this afternoon and attempt to change this history by pretending it was all part of my grand plan. Second, in classic rookie-mom fashion, on the drive in today I had my head turned talking to Katharine and managed to rear-end the car in front of me. Fortunately we were going slow and no one was hurt but I did manage to enrage the man driving the car and put a nice little indentation in his back right bumper. And, to add the cherry to the top of why I am not mom of the year today, the first thing I said when I hit the car was, "this is why I can't talk when I'm driving, Katharine!" And I believe I might have followed that up with an inappropriate word for young ears and a hand slam on the steering wheel. Ugh, there really is nothing like parenting to make one acutely aware of their own flaws. Humility, humility, humility.

Let's hope all of our days pick up from here on out! A quick stop for celebratory cupcakes after school seems like a good start!

Isn't she lovely?

I truly love this picture and that sweet face peering up at me! The camera really does love this pretty little girl. (I would post more pictures of Matt, who is equally photogenic, but slightly more camera shy).

Dowdle Family Reunion 2012

As we do the first Sunday of every August, Dowdles from all over the Southeast congregate in the tiny old (un-airconditioned) schoolhouse in Hickory Grove, SC for a southern-style family reunion. There is food galore (the yummy southern kinds: fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs, casseroles of every variety and desserts, desserts, desserts!). This year about 100 were in attendance.

Featured here is one small branch of that tree enjoying some time at "the pond house" together before heading up to the school house.

Newest Aquarium Members!

In an effort to spend all of our money in one weekend of fun and games, we became members of the Aquarium this weekend. We met our good friends Scott and Ashleigh there with their son, William and we all had a great time! The kids loved it and it was a great way to beat the heat. Matt's favorite part was going to look for the scuba diver in the big shark tank and KK wanted to make sure we passed by the touch tank (and the gift shop!).

First family trip to the movies

Saturday night we all went to the movies to see the Smurfs in 3D. We had a great time and the kids seemed to really enjoy it (although Matt gave up on the glasses about 5 minutes in to the movie).

But, holy cow, going to the movie theatre is expensive these days! I felt like I was living my own American Express Commercial:

$44 = price for four movie tickets and "fee" for 3D glasses
$18 = price for snack combo, 2 large drinks and a large popcorn
$3 = price for cheesy picture posted here
Priceless = seeing it on the big screen

I don't know - I could have hit the RedBox for $1.09 and provided snacks for less than $5. This just might have been the incentive I needed to get back in to NetFlix. It's a good thing these little guys are so cute because they sure don't come cheap! ;)
