The day after

I just heard Katharine say the following from her bedroom, after trading Halloween candy with Matthew:

"I'm in Heaven, I have candy and books!"

Sleeping babies

He's not a baby anymore, but he still looks like a little angel when he is sleeping.

Day 3 - Cleveland

Today we checked out the Great Lakes Science Center and the kids loved it. As Katharine said, "we have to go, I have science in my blood!" So, here we are having fun.

Then it was time to go the competition for Daddy to judge and us to sell our wares.

Day 2 - Cleveland

Today we went to see the house they used to film A Christmas Story.

Then we ate lunch at a downtown park full of food trucks - we even got birthday cupcakes. Our afternoon was spent roaming the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mom's birthday

Celebrating at Bowen's Island

Cleveland trip - day 1

Fourteen hours of driving later, we are in Cleveland for our end of summer road trip. How did we occupy ourselves? Reading, car-forts, and hardly any tears. See...

We also took a break at the arts and crafts center, Tamarack, in Beckley, WV. It's a neat place for local artisan stuff.

We finally arrived and took a dip in the pool and hot tub.

Day 2 with no kids - sushi

I've learned to like a limited array of sushi and, with our picky-eater children, that seemed like a good choice for tonight's adventure! Now I've got my fix for the next six months.

Day 1 with no kids

Yesterday, with mixed emotions, we dropped both our babies off for a week of sleep away camp at Bethelwoods in York, SC. They had friends from church and school there so their emotions were less mixed - "see ya."

But, as Paul said on the drive home, this week they take another big step to becoming independent, self-sufficient people. *sigh* I really do want that but, I still felt kind of sad leaving them behind.

That being said, we are free for a whole week! What did we do on day 1? We went running! Guess who's idea that was? Here are some shots of us tackling Charleston's one and only mountain, the Mount Pleasant Bridge!

Happy Mother's Day! I am blessed to have an abundance of wonderful women mother me and help raise me right! You know who you are and you all rock!

And I am sooooo blessed to have these two amazing children to call my babies! I love them to the moon and back!

Sibling sagas

A conversation at the Roof household tonight:

Katharine: Mom, watch this. Code one.
Matthew: You are so beautiful!
Katharine: Code two.
Matthew: You are the best sister in the world and I love you!

14th Tooth is Out

KK has lost yet another tooth and, apparently, we are sending it to the tooth fairy by pony express!

Cheerio, Disney

This girl! So, by whatever circumstances, there have been a large number of British people here at the hotel and in the parks. We have been hearing that charming accent everywhere. Well, about two days in, Katharine starting speaking with a British accent. About three days in, I became Mumsy. So, tomorrow we won't say goodbye, we'll say Cheerio!

Day 5 - Hollywood Studios

Today we went to Hollywood Studios and it has a similar appeal to the Magic Kingdom, beautiful backdrops everywhere you look. We took in Toy Story Mania - so fun with the shooting arcade aspect. While we were there, we ran into Green Army Man and he loved meeting Philip Bobby John. Then we took in the Muppets 3D movie, which was hysterical (and Matt was convinced they were only pointing at him). We had a character lunch at Hollywood and Vine with Sophia the First, Jake the pirate, Handy Manny, and Doc McStuffins.

After lunch, we went to Star Tours and helped to save the Galaxy! I must be getting old because that one almost made me nauseous. The remainder of our time their was checking out shops and trading pins (which I am getting way too into - apparently, it's not just for kids).

After a week of Disney Magic we decided to spend the late afternoon/evening by the pool. We had dinner poolside and the kids have been swimming like crazy. Now, to figure out how to tear them away and get them to take a bath!

Day 4 - Epcot

So, Epcot was really cool and we were there for the morning and came back again at night. In the morning we had fastpasses for The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Soarin', and a character meet and greet with Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy. We had lunch in Morraco and took a quick tour of the UK and Germany.

In the evening we came back for a fabulous dinner in Canada at Le Cellier. After dinner we roamed through Norway, Mexico, and China. They were having an Easter event where you could look for hidden eggs. We found 4 of 12.

Day 3 - Animal Kingdom

Wow! Animal Kingdom was amazing! We started the day with a character breakfast at Tusker House, which in set in an African village. It was fabulous and made me want to head to Africa. After a nice visit with Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Daisy Duck; we went on an African Safari. We "Fastpassed" this and I would say it is a must if your going to Animal Kingdom. It was so fun and we saw so many animals. And, fortunately, we survived the rickety old bridge (ask Matt about this sometime).

After our stay in Africa, we headed over to Asia for a Chinese lunch at Yak and Yeti and a quick browse through some Asian markets.

Our afternoon was spent watching "It's Tough to be a Bug" and a trip on the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch to check out the petting zoo.

Day 2 - Autographs, autographs

Today we were on the hunt for autographs between our fast pass rides (Peter Pan's flight, Haunted Mansion, and    Mad Tea Party).  The kids patiently stood in line for a total of five autographs- Pluto, Marie, Alice, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter. I got a kick out of Mad Hatter, british accent and fast on his feet wisecracks.

First pair of ears

Disney - day 1

We arrived without getting lost once in textbook time. The security guards for the Animal Kingdom greeted us with "welcome home."  Not only was our room ready when we arrived but we'd been chosen for the safari room of the day- which I'm pretty sure means a room with a better view, but definitely involved having our picture taken. We got to our room and immediately saw giraffes and lots of other cool wildlife.

After a quick loop around the lobby, we headed for the bus to the Magic Kingdom. We had a glorious afternoon taking in the sights, shops, and our first ride, The Pirates of the Carribean. After an Italian dinner at Tony's (the pistachio crenelated brûlée was the highlight), we stayed for an amazing fireworks show and the electric parade (Matt waved liked crazy at all the passing floats). The kids fell asleep on the bus ride back - happy customers!

...and then this happened

So, we were at the egg hunt and Katharine appeared with a sticky, bloody tooth! A red, cherry-flavored jelly bean had stuck to it and yanked it out. So, this makes tooth 13.

Egg Hunt

Today was the Palm Sunday Festival at curch and the kids have a blast looking for eggs! Matt is featured here with his buddy, Brody and Katharine is featured with pal, Catherine.

Guess who's heading to Disney!

It's spring break for the Roof children, so we're heading to Disney World. We leave on Monday for five glorious nights in Mickey's hometown! We're staying in the Animal Kingdom Resort and can't wait to see the Sahara!

The picture above is from our big reveal party where we told the kids about our big adventure. The surprise party began with a poem telling them they had to find clues to guess where our adventure would begin. The clues ranged from rain ponchos to sunscreen to clickable sharpie pens. The final clue was a pair of Disney autograph books. They figured it out and had a fun time doing it.

Poor Paul is getting left behind, as he has to teach this week.

Another one bites the dust

We have been keeping the tooth fairy busy at my house. Katharine has lost eleven teeth so far.
